I know for a fact that trademarks must be exercised in order to maintain ownership. Patents may be different. Simply owning them may be enough.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject will let us know. Marty - Legality is one thing. Decency is another.

NPE's are a dirty type of way to make money, don't you think? Nokia might have sold its patents to earn money, this is totally valid and the one paying for them has the right to licence them or go in court.

Don't judge anyone, AFAIK they might have found the same tricks independently, and let the Justice do its job. Patent trolling should be illegal.

Non practicing companies should not be allowed to acquire patents. And if a company terminates a certain line of products, then all patents within that line should be made invalid within a year.

Are Apple patent troll? It is common practice to make patents and not making products. It is a method for blocking competition for the lifespan of the patent.

And maybe also preparing for if you want to make such stuff. This is questionable, and hardly the aim for the system. But it is much better than owning patents within a disciplin you are not working with at all.

Patents serve a purpose but they are often used for dirty tactics. Canon is a patent champion among camera manufacturers. I sometimes like to think they make so many patents to block the natural development path of the competition.

I'm probably going to be accused of being over-defensive about my own brand, but blocking competitors with patents is a very common practice, and I don't honestly know whether Canon are more or less guilty than anyone else.

Canon patents get a lot of media attention, while others, for some reason don't. Canon tend to patent a lot of things that never get into production.

In many cases these are just multiple options for a particular lens, and only one of them ends up being used, as clearly it would be pointless to manufacture and sell multiple versions of the same product.

I reviewed these patents and have determined they're meaningless garbage. There is a reason no real company owns them, they describe nothing.

If they had value a real company would have purchased them a long time ago. Think about it. They could just as easily sell these patents as troll them.

But since they have no product, and no interest in a purchase, they play these games. Honestly these patents should never have been awarded.

And yet you are not the judge so you "determining" this or that isnt relevant. You make it seem like youre the presiding judge of the case.

Of the 12 US patents I own or jointly own, only one, which was shared with one other inventor, was used in a product. The others are just out there.

Maybe a couple were used for protection. I don't know. Based on their content, I think not. There is a lot of social pressure to file patents even when the inventor thinks they are BS.

I worked for a big company. They awarded their employees for making patents. And, what did they use the patents for? They had an agreement with the other very few big international companies in the same branch.

They could use each others patent. The goal was to make it impossible for a new big company to rise. And to make it fair, those companies that hade the fewest patents had to pay A LOT of money to those that had the most.

It was only the number that counted. And - therefore the company spawned out zillions of patents. Some were good and realated to something needed, but most was just portfolio fillers.

It is easy to make a statement that you have examined them and found them unworthy. What is your expertise that should make anyone give credence to your opinion?

If you have specific expertise then let us know. We're in the middle of a deep recession, like a depression in the coming weeks, and these bastards still doing their thing??

By all means tread on the execs of NPEs, but be kind to cockroaches, they are innocent and harmless, even if a little creepy The real cockroaches are politicians being paid to not look out for citizens, and during this pandemic, have been sitting home for months getting paid while millions of taxpayers lose their jobs.

They are like cockroaches. The problem is these organizations have been abusing the law for decades mostly single offices in one county in Texas where there are friendly judges.

Some companies legitimately work as agents for patent holders to acquire licensing, but these buy bundles of patents from obscure or failing companies and then start looking for someone to sue.

These people are certainly not helping the development of technology, nor providing livelihood to inventors. On one hand, that's understandable.

On the other hand, if a patent itself is, for the inventor, supposed to be a good thing and a thing of value, why should it lose its value just because the inventor decides to sell it to someone else?

Pretty short sited. Transportation companies don't make or invent. In fact, most businesses don't make or invent. Most companies either provide a service, or re-sell something that someone else made.

And without those "middlemen", we would have fewer options. MHShooter: One could say that by suing infringers, it sees to it that the patents are not forgotten and do not lose their value until, of course, they expire.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't like it any more than anyone else, esepcially since the patents those patent trolls try to exploit tend to be somewhat dubious sometimes.

But then again, I guess in a world that needs patents at all and the profits from them instead of doing everything the open source way, i.

MHShooter - hemiguy is right - most businesses don't make anything, they just buy and sell, that's what e. And most transportation companies don't build subways or railway lines, they just operate a service delivering goods or transporting people.

But I agree that NPEs appear to be just a bunch of bloodsuckers, and I don't regard making a profession out of suing people to be an ethical way of doing business.
